Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
The finest La Gaffeliere I have ever tasted, the prodigious 2005 boasts a dense rubypurple color in addition to a flamboyant bouquet of lead pencil shavings, creme de cassis, blackberries, smoked meats, incense, and Asian spice. Fabulously deep and full-bodied as well as ethereal and exceptionally elegant for its explosive richness and intensity, its lightness of being reflects the vineyard’s sensational terroir. This succulent beauty appears to be approachable, but that belies some significant tannins.

Has a fabulous, opulent nose of crushed blackberry, wild licorice and flowers. Full-bodied, with velvety tannins, lots of fruit and a long finish. A flavorful young red.

The Wine Palate : The 2005 La Gaffeliere is composed of 80% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 10% Cabernet Franc. Deep garnet-brick in color, it explodes with bombastic black and blue fruit preserves, giving way to notions of pencil lead, unsmoked cigars, and bay leaves, with a hint of smoked meats. In the mouth, it is an absolute monster of a wine - full-bodied, intense, and jam-packed with black fruit preserves, nicely framed by very firm, grainy tannins, finishing decadently and with epic length.

First bottle TCA. Second smells clean and very concentrated but furry tannins and dry and a bit tough. Strong statement. Thick. Chewy. A tad heavy. Clumsy.

Jeff Leve - The Wine Cellar Insider
Tight, but with air and extensive swirling, notes of boysenberry, blackberry and blue fruit, along with licorice, spice and minerals begin to show. Fat,concentrated and filled with juicy ripe, fruit, this plush, powerful wine ends with a blast of spicy, chocolate covered black raspberries. This wine needs at least another 5-7 years before everything comes together.

The roughness that was apparent at the en primeur tastings in 2006 have gone. In its place is a lean, rather dry wine, firm and hard. It has a peppery edge from alcohol, which is off-putting, but the acidity promises some good aging.

Very solid fruit quality, if quite reserved. Dry and tannic on the palate - a big mouth-coating dry tannin finish. But the fruit quality is good, and then firming acidity nicely weighted. Could be one for the long haul this.

Jane Anson - Inside Bordeaux
A warm year, reflected in the generosity and velvety texture of the tannins, and the reflective deep garnet colour. Clear liquorice root, aromatics of tobacco, cigar, iris, with grilled loganberry and raspberry fruit. Plenty of life ahead of it, with excellent backbone of fresh acidities. As it opens tertiary notes of truffle, soy and broth appear, fully in it.
