Wine Spectator March - 2006

Aromas of blackberry, dark chocolate and lightly toasted oak follow through to a full-bodied palate, with good tannins and a medium finish. Slightly hollow midpalate but well done.

Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
A good effort from this Margaux estate, the 2003 Rauzan Gassies offers lots of plum, black cherry, forest floor, spice and earth notes in a medium-bodied, surprisingly dense style. With attractive sweetness, adequate acidity and ripe tannin, it should drink well in its youth and last for a decade.

Very beautiful dark red. Intense. Beautiful. Intense nose. Refined. Fruity. Delicately chocolatey note. Has something changed at this estate? In any case, the palate bears witness to it. Very beautiful construction, very fruity, finely woven and silky. Wow! At last this cru offers us Margaux! On the finish, the tannin still has a slight lack of maturity but it's good. A spectacular improvement since my primeur analysis.

A vibrant, healthy ruby ??color. Impressive! Quite ripe on the nose, but well-structured on the palate. Lively and seductive, even if the tannins are a little aggressive. Pure.

Château Rauzan Gassies
Château Rauzan Gassies
While the noble house of Chevalier de Gassies is one of the oldest in Margaux, the wine history of Château Rauzan-Gassies begins in the 18th century. This château was created by Mr. Pierre DESMEZURES DE RAUZAN, a merchant who was also the tenant of the noble house of Latour. This position allowed him to collect seigneurial rights and increase his own estate. He bought numerous plots from neighboring farmers and thus, in about twenty years at the end of the 17th century, he created two beautiful vineyards: Rauzan-Gassies and Pichon-Longueville, both future classified growths. Rauzan-Gassies wines have always enjoyed a certain reputation in England, thanks to Mr. de Rauzan's approach of personally selling his harvests aboard a ship he chartered to the port of London. Mr. de Rauzan, who later became Counselor to the Parliament of Bordeaux, left his mark on the property's label in the form of wings protecting grape clusters. During the 1855 classification, RAUZAN GASSIES wines were classified as second growths. In 1946, Mr. Paul QUIE, a certified wine broker in Bercy (Wine trading center for Paris and its region) whose father was already in the profession, bought this vineyard, following numerous predecessors such as Mr. Rhoné-Péraire who, in the 19th century, had a particularly positive impact on the growth's reputation. In 1968, his son Jean Michel took over the management of the estate; he has been assisted since 1995 by Mr. Jean-Louis CAMP, and since 2001 by his children, Anne-Françoise and Jean-Philippe QUIE.
