CHÂTEAU RAUZAN GASSIES 2005

Tasting notes: Harvested relatively early, the Merlot brings roundness and freshness to the wine with a delicious and crunchy fruit. Harvested later, the Petit Verdot, present in a tiny quantity, brings, through its deep color, the right reflection of the aromatic complexity of the wine. Maturing later, the Cabernet Sauvignon is long overdue. The dominant grape variety, it represents at least three quarters of the final blend. The heart of the great wine, it is balanced between young plots with aromas of blackcurrant and blackberry, and older ones, ennobled by time, with silky and smooth tannins.

Grape variety / Blend: Cabernet sauvignon (~58%), merlot (~40%), cabernet franc (~2%) (variations are possible from one vintage to another)

Aging: Aged 12 months in French oak barrels

Maturity: 2010 - 2015

Food and Wine Pairing: Beef and venison

Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
Significantly better from bottle than it was from barrel, the 2005 Rauzan-Gassies appears to be the finest wine this estate has ever produced. Dense purple-hued with a beautiful perfume of camphor, creme de cassis, licorice, bay leaf, and incense, it is a full-bodied, stunningly concentrated, broad, rich Margaux with lovely integrated tannins. This backward 2005 will handsomely repay cellaring. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2030+.

Paired with prime rib. Beautiful wine, well-integrated tannins, low acidity, lots of earth, truffle, and flint. This can easily last another 5 years. I'll make another one at the end of this year. Excellent under-the-radar producer, and I love the traditional, old-school winemaking (less fruity) with an emphasis on terroir and minimal intervention in fermentation. Very enjoyable. It served its purpose.

Solid, dry tannins, very firm and hard, but also ripe. The wine has high extraction and very dark fruit flavors, but resists being overpowering. This could well turn out to be a very elegant wine.

There's some coffee here and solid blackcurrant ripeness, in a fairly svelte wine with black cherry notes on the palate and dry, assertive tannins. It finishes dusty and without the fruity sweetness I was hoping for.

Falstaff May - 2006

Very dark ruby garnet, almost opaque core, violet rim lightening, delicate leafy undertone to the cassis note on the nose, some nougat and licorice. Substantial on the palate, powerful, delicate bitter chocolate, good complexity, delicate citrus touch, better in the mouth than the nose promises.

Jeff Leve - The Wine Cellar Insider
Better on the nose, with its earthy, tobacco, cedar wood, red berries and forest scented aromatics than on the medium bodied, fresh, bright, crisp and clipped palate. Stylistically classic in its nature, some tasters are going to like this wine more than others.

Smudgy rim. Not much nose. Very sweet and thick then greenish tinge on the finish. Caricature wine.

Château Rauzan Gassies
Château Rauzan Gassies
While the noble house of Chevalier de Gassies is one of the oldest in Margaux, the wine history of Château Rauzan-Gassies begins in the 18th century. This château was created by Mr. Pierre DESMEZURES DE RAUZAN, a merchant who was also the tenant of the noble house of Latour. This position allowed him to collect seigneurial rights and increase his own estate. He bought numerous plots from neighboring farmers and thus, in about twenty years at the end of the 17th century, he created two beautiful vineyards: Rauzan-Gassies and Pichon-Longueville, both future classified growths. Rauzan-Gassies wines have always enjoyed a certain reputation in England, thanks to Mr. de Rauzan's approach of personally selling his harvests aboard a ship he chartered to the port of London. Mr. de Rauzan, who later became Counselor to the Parliament of Bordeaux, left his mark on the property's label in the form of wings protecting grape clusters. During the 1855 classification, RAUZAN GASSIES wines were classified as second growths. In 1946, Mr. Paul QUIE, a certified wine broker in Bercy (Wine trading center for Paris and its region) whose father was already in the profession, bought this vineyard, following numerous predecessors such as Mr. Rhoné-Péraire who, in the 19th century, had a particularly positive impact on the growth's reputation. In 1968, his son Jean Michel took over the management of the estate; he has been assisted since 1995 by Mr. Jean-Louis CAMP, and since 2001 by his children, Anne-Françoise and Jean-Philippe QUIE.
