Jancis Robinson March - 2014
Jancis Robinson
Dark, heavy, very intense fruit concentration. Lighter tannins than expected, and a lick of vanilla oak. Will doubtless develop, but it seems rather simple and over-done right now.

Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
A prodigious effort, the 2011 Cotes du Roussillon Villages Le Clos Des Fees checks in as a blend of 50% Syrah, 30% Grenache and 10% each of Carignan and Mourvedre. Aged 16 months in 70% new French oak, it dishes out thrilling amounts of dark berry fruit, cassis, licorice, smoked herbs and violets that flow to a full-bodied, layered and fantastically concentrated profile on the palate. Despite all of the richness here, it stays lively and fresh, with integrated acidity and sound underlying structure. It’s a knockout bottle of wine to drink over the coming 10-15 years. One of the leading estates in the region, Domaine du Clos des Fees is run by Herve Bizeul. His 2011s are thrilling wines that are up with the creme de la creme of the vintage. www.closdesfees.com

Clos Des Fées
Clos Des Fées

Clos des Fées is one of the most singular and most celebrated estates in Roussillon. Founded in 1997 by Hervé Bizeul, former Best Young Sommelier of France, restaurateur and journalist, at the heart of the limestone cirque of Vingrau in the Pyrénées-Orientales, it was born of a passionate encounter with a wild and forgotten terroir, planted with old vines whose gnarled arms the village elders had always known as "old."

Starting from almost nothing, with his first grapes vinified in a friend's cellar and pressed through a butter cloth, Hervé Bizeul built in less than twenty years one of the most complex vineyards in the Languedoc-Roussillon: thirty hectares, one hundred and twelve plots spread across seven distinct terroirs between Vingrau, Tautavel, Maury, Calce, Lesquerde, Opoul and Espira de l'Agly. A rare geological diversity — comparable, according to geologists, to that of Alsace or Madagascar — that nurtures wines of exceptional complexity and depth.

The wines of Clos des Fées are recognisable for their density, their generous fruit and their ability to age with grace. The cuvée La Petite Sibérie, from a single plot of old Grenache lashed two hundred days a year by icy winds, has become one of the cult bottles of Roussillon. Vintages 2011, 2012, 2016, 2020 and 2022 rank among the most accomplished expressions from the estate.
