Jancis Robinson September - 2020
Jancis Robinson
Hervé Bizeul’s wines seem to have settled down over the years. Hand-harvested grapes from selected plots of 50- to 100-year-old Grenache Noir, Lladoner Pelut, Carignan and Syrah vines on limestone-clay soils are vinified in stainless steel after cold maceration. The wine is aged without racking for 12 months in one- and two-year-old barrels and bottled after fining. Savoury nose and good concentration with just a hint of some very light brett? Rich, layered and interesting. Long and exciting with masses of almost porty spice and sweetness but it’s not flabby nor too potent.

Adrian van Velsen - vvWine
Medium ruby, violet reflections. Very intense nose, feels warm and almost slightly cooked, ripe fruit, Christmas spices, very complex. The palate is voluminous, powerful body, ripe fruit, the tannins are remarkably finely woven, the fruit impressive, the alcohol however perceptible though well integrated, a pleasantly long, spicy finish. Do not serve too warm.

Bettane et Desseauve
A wine that plays on contradictions. Combining youthfulness and slightly evolving notes, it stands straight, taut, supple and energetic. Long on the palate, well-structured, time does its work and blends saline, floral, menthol and peppery notes with dark fruit and aromas of havana and garrigue. To drink now or to keep longer, to decant in any case.

Clos Des Fées
Clos Des Fées

Clos des Fées is one of the most singular and most celebrated estates in Roussillon. Founded in 1997 by Hervé Bizeul, former Best Young Sommelier of France, restaurateur and journalist, at the heart of the limestone cirque of Vingrau in the Pyrénées-Orientales, it was born of a passionate encounter with a wild and forgotten terroir, planted with old vines whose gnarled arms the village elders had always known as "old."

Starting from almost nothing, with his first grapes vinified in a friend's cellar and pressed through a butter cloth, Hervé Bizeul built in less than twenty years one of the most complex vineyards in the Languedoc-Roussillon: thirty hectares, one hundred and twelve plots spread across seven distinct terroirs between Vingrau, Tautavel, Maury, Calce, Lesquerde, Opoul and Espira de l'Agly. A rare geological diversity — comparable, according to geologists, to that of Alsace or Madagascar — that nurtures wines of exceptional complexity and depth.

The wines of Clos des Fées are recognisable for their density, their generous fruit and their ability to age with grace. The cuvée La Petite Sibérie, from a single plot of old Grenache lashed two hundred days a year by icy winds, has become one of the cult bottles of Roussillon. Vintages 2011, 2012, 2016, 2020 and 2022 rank among the most accomplished expressions from the estate.
