Jane Anson - Inside Bordeaux
Old school charm, well balanced, pencil lead, crayon, graphite, cassis, plum, mint leaf, signature Batailley, bounding energy, in the way that Gloria was finessed classic St Julien, this plays the same role in Pauillac. Sums up why 2005 works – so drinkable today and yet will keep on delivering for 30 years. Love this. Doesn’t shout out its presence, but it just exudes confidence and restrained power. 50% new oak, Denis Dubourdieu consultant, Philippe Castéja owner.

Dark, intense, beautiful, bright and slightly evolved color. Intense, fine, fruity and very surprising nose. Nuance of blackberry and a touch of truffle. It is the densest on the attack, but also the softest and develops rich, full and flavorsome in the middle. Very complete, it finishes with a noble texture, very aromatic with fine grain in the persistence with a return of floral nuances. It can be served.

Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
Here, it has an effervescent bouquet with vibrant red berry fruit and superb mineralité. This is extremely well focused, with hints of rose petal emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with finer tannin than in previous years. I feel there is still some oak to be fully absorbed, so don't be afraid to cellar this 2005 for another four or five years; but, even at this early stage, you can appreciate its precision on the graphite-infused finish. The 2005 Batailley is where the estate began its upward swing that is continuing to this day.

Classic Pauillac, with tannin, structure. freshness, crisp fruit, firm elegance and a blast of cassis, cedar and tobacco. Still young, and seems to be holding some of its cards in reserve. Clearly, this has improved over the past decade and will definitely be more interesting to drink with another 5 years of bottle age.

Nice violetty, fragrant nose, with damson and ripe black fruits. A touch of vanilla. Very fine, racy mouth-filling palate, but a little lean perhaps. Pretty, harmonious, and well-handled structure.

Has licorice, currant and fresh cèpe on the nose. Full and silky, with lots of sweet tobacco and berry character and plenty of ripe Cabernet fruit. Long and caressing.

This is more about structure and wood than fruit. Where the fruit shows through, it is underwhelming, somewhat austere, and needs more intensity, although it certainly has sweetness.

Château Batailley
Château Batailley

Château Batailley is a Bordeaux wine estate. In the Pauillac AOC, it is classified as a 5th Grand Cru Classé in the official 1855 Médoc wine classification, and is one of the jewels of the Castéja family and Borie-Manoux. The name of this property comes from the word Battle which took place in 1453 on the vineyards and the Château. This was the Hundred Years' War.

During this war, the French recaptured Château Latour, which was occupied by the English and marked the end of British rule in Aquitaine. In the 17th century, vines were planted on these historically rich lands. The Château's park was designed in the 19th century by Barillet-Deschamps, Napoleon III's landscape architect. Château Batailley is a classic Pauillac, with a dark ruby color, well-structured and pronounced blackcurrant notes.

The best vintages of Château Batailley are 1959, 1982. The 2000 vintage and the 2009 wines are excellent. Finally, the 1990 grand crus classés and 2005 grand crus are particularly exceptional.
