Roasted coffee beans; tobacco; ashes; later on some truffle on the nose, light notes of cassis are underlying it; intoxinating for old school Bordeaux lovers; good structure on the palate; some sourcherry notes; lean and lush; not very deep; medium long finish; great pleasure to drink right now

Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
Tasted at the Chateau Batailley dinner at The Square. The ’94 Batailley has a comparatively pale hue compared to the ’95. It sports a leafy, earthy bouquet, well defined, very traditional in style with hints of leather and sous-bois. This is conservative, but not unattractive. The palate is medium-bodied with sharp acidity on the entry, the tannins demonstrating a touch of bitterness and the finish a little hollow, attesting a vintage that denuded wines of completely ripeness. It offers a modicum of pleasure, but I would not leave this too long. Drink now-2013. Tasted January 2010.

Château Batailley
Château Batailley

Château Batailley is a Bordeaux wine estate. In the Pauillac AOC, it is classified as a 5th Grand Cru Classé in the official 1855 Médoc wine classification, and is one of the jewels of the Castéja family and Borie-Manoux. The name of this property comes from the word Battle which took place in 1453 on the vineyards and the Château. This was the Hundred Years' War.

During this war, the French recaptured Château Latour, which was occupied by the English and marked the end of British rule in Aquitaine. In the 17th century, vines were planted on these historically rich lands. The Château's park was designed in the 19th century by Barillet-Deschamps, Napoleon III's landscape architect. Château Batailley is a classic Pauillac, with a dark ruby color, well-structured and pronounced blackcurrant notes.

The best vintages of Château Batailley are 1959, 1982. The 2000 vintage and the 2009 wines are excellent. Finally, the 1990 grand crus classés and 2005 grand crus are particularly exceptional.
