Expert's opinions

Continuing to edge closer to maturity, this stunner offers everything you want in classic Pauillac. Loaded with tobacco leaf, cigar box, cedar, red and black currants, forest leaf and smoke, the wine is full-bodied, concentrated, tannic and expressive on the nose and palate. It could take 5 years to reach its peak, but with 2 hours in the decanter now, it is already a stunning tasting experience.

Very dense colour, and youthful. Classic aromas - the blackcurrant and ripe plum flesh marrying to cedar and spice, a deal of tobacco ad smokiness, and gravelly earth in there too. What a lovely mouthful of wine this is, the seductive, luxurious weight and sweetness of the fruit beginning to flood through onto the palate, with an effortless, creamy and chocolaty weight of ripe tannin behind it. Lovely balancing acids, a wine with real charm, but also all the structure and depth in the world. Long, complex, but more than that, really quite beautiful.

Offers crushed currant and blackberry on the nose, turning to tar and licorice. Full-bodied, with a solid core of ripe fruit and seamless tannins. Goes on and on. Very, very beautiful.

Jane Anson - Inside Bordeaux
A fine tannic frame, blackberry and cassis fruits, hints of cigar, rosebud and tobacco leaf. You will be able to find more generous examples of the 2005 vintage in Pauillac appellation right now, as there remains some austerity to the tannins through the mid palate, but this is a vintage that has proved stubborn over the past 15 years, and is only just starting to come into its own

Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
The 2005 Pichon Baron has a dense ruby/purple color, sweet crème de cassis fruit, lots of cedar wood and forest floor, medium to full body, ripe tannin, and a long finish of a good 30+ seconds. This is a beauty and one of the most successful Pauillacs of this vintage. Drink it now through 2035.

64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc. Aged 15 months in oak barrels (80% new). Garnet with brick at the rim. Lovely depth of fruit on the nose – luscious and full. Smoke and cedar as it opens. Round and gourmand on attack with a touch of sweetness but still very fresh. Tannins solid and firm but wrapped in generous fruit. Long, persistent finish. A lot going on.

Château Pichon Longueville Baron
Château Pichon Longueville Baron

Château Pichon Longueville Baron is a Bordeaux wine estate and classified as a Second Growth (Deuxième Cru) in 1855. The Pichon Longueville Baron vineyard (as it is called to distinguish it from its neighbor Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande) is largely adjacent to that of Latour, on one of the finest terroirs in Pauillac. It was in the 17th century that Jacques de Pichon, Baron of Longueville, began establishing the Pichon-Longueville vineyard. The wine's reputation was established within a few years. The current château was built in 1851 by Raoul de Pichon-Longueville. Château Pichon-Longueville comes from vines in the estate's historical terroir. This results in full-bodied wines, rich in tannins, characterized by their finesse and elegance. Their length on the palate is exceptional and they have significant aging potential.
