Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
It has a powerful and intense bouquet as always: exemplary graphite and cedar scents, a touch of black pepper and incense. It seems to unfurl in the glass, like a motor revving its engine. The palate is beautifully balanced with its trademark firm tannic structure, a Mouton-Rothschild with backbone and masculinity. Layers of black fruit intermingling with mint and graphite, a hint of licorice emanating from the Merlot, gently fanning out and my God, it is incredibly long. It is not like the 1985 Mouton-Rothschild that is so fleshy and generous. This is serious, aristocratic Mouton, a true vin de garde and yes, I do think drinkers will have to wait until it reaches its true peak.

Ageless, yet balanced. Black color. Mint, mineral, berry and cherry. Full-bodied, chewy and tight. Long, long finish. A great, great wine.

Intense carmine garnet, broad ochre rim, orange reflections. On the nose, attractive dark berry fruit, tobacco, nuances of dried herbs, some nougat, ripe cherry fruit, fine noble wood spice. On the palate, firm tannins, hints of blackberry confiture and dark nougat, feels sweet and opulent at the core, mineral, tobacco nuances, very good length, fresh and persistent, salty finish, has reached its first true drinking peak, with assured further aging potential.

Jane Anson - Inside Bordeaux
Powerful, concentrated, still very much in its drinking window almost 40 years old, tannins now melted and resolved but going nowhere, and this brambled, cassis and blackberry fruit is just so inviting, sliced through with liqourice, espresso and crushed mint leaf. This is a wine that still, even now, benefits from an extremely long carafe – on a recent tasting a few years ago, when it wasn’t quite showing up to expectations, it took a full 24 hours to suddenly burst out of the glass and show its brilliance. So my strong advice is that if you are not blown away immediately, put it to one side and come back, because this is magic in a bottle.

Jeff Leve - The Wine Cellar Insider
Firm, fiercely tannic, strict, and young, this bottle remains stubbornly adolescent. Incredibly concentrated, powerful, long and intense, this is a modern-day version of the 1928, which took 50-60 years to come around. Younger consumers with patience should take a good look at this. Provided that youth and patience can get along.

A bottle brought to dinner and decanted less than two hours before drinking. Black as night and very 'thick'. Tastes as though there were a strong dose of press wine in here. Not the most expressive bottle – but it had probably been shaken up a bit. There is certainly Pauillac rigour in spades. I remember sharing a bottle with Gerald Asher and the late Geoffrey Roberts at Clarke's restaurant when the wine was only a few years old and completely impenetrable. The tannins have now abated and there is a little bit of fine sediment.

Château Mouton Rothschild
Château Mouton Rothschild

Château Mouton Rothschild is one of the most iconic wine estates in the world. Located in the Pauillac appellation, it is the only wine from the official 1855 Bordeaux classification to have been elevated to the rank of Premier Cru Classé in 1973, after having been initially classified as Second Cru.

Acquired in 1853 by Nathaniel de Rothschild, the estate then named Brane-Mouton became Château Mouton Rothschild and entered into legend under the impetus of Baron Philippe de Rothschild. A visionary, he profoundly modernized the vineyard, developed the cellars and imposed absolute quality standards, making Mouton one of the greatest wines of Bordeaux. His motto illustrates this unique ascension: "Premier je suis, second je fus, Mouton ne change".

The singularity of Mouton Rothschild is also expressed through its artistic labels, illustrated each year by renowned contemporary artists, reinforcing its cultural and heritage aura. This quest for excellence is also found in the other properties of the Rothschild family, notably Château Clerc Milon and Château d'Armailhac.

Among the most iconic vintages of Château Mouton Rothschild are:
