Tasted blind. Blackish crimson. Not very pure or direct on the nose. Muted – is this a good thing? There is concentration here but nothing other-worldly. Just a bit of heat on the end. Seems to lack a bit of freshness in this context. But the tannins have been treated very well.

Floral, playful, profound and complex, violets, stony notes, licorice, noble. Full of pressure, dense, yet feather-light, sensational tannins, finely interwoven with the fruit, excellent balance, red fruit, very long. Among the best of the vintage.

Leather and black-spice aromas are a prelude to the richness and power of this wine. It is concentrated and full of ripe black-plum flavors, and acidity. Drink this massive wine from 2028.

Falstaff March - 2024
Falstaff
Dark ruby, purple reflections, subtle ochre rim. An inviting bouquet with subtle notes of liquorice, black cherry and nuances of oak. Medium complexity with red berries, a fresh structure, silky, ripe tannins and a salty minerality. Polished and approachable but should ideally be left to mature for a few more years.

Jeff Leve - The Wine Cellar Insider
Deep in color, especially for the vintage, you find tobacco leaf, black cherry, pencil shavings, cedar, spice, and dark fruits appearing in the perfume with no effort at all. There is a richness in the palate. The fruit is ripe, fresh, vibrant, and chewy, with lift and energy in the mouth that carries through to the finish. As all fans of Montrose know, the wine more often than not requires decades of age before it is ready to taste, but 2021 is a different beast, allowing you to enjoy it with just a few years before it begins to be fun to taste. The wine was made by blending 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot, 13.1% ABV, 3.7. Yields were 38 hectoliters per hectare, with 40% of the harvest going into the Grand Vin. The harvest took place from September 21 to October 6. Drink from 2028-2055.

13.2% alcohol. 37% of the grapes in 2021 went into the Grand Vin. Dense ruby. Super floral on the nose, cassis and blackberries, a hint of violets, plus stony notes, cool and noble, profound. On the palate slender and fresh, this is super crisp, has freshness, spice and a very good structure, the tannins are powerful, yet remain discreetly in the background, super finely interwoven with the fruit, everything in great balance. On the finish long, fresh, red fruit and with lots of finesse. As always at a very high level, stylistically however completely different from the last three hot years. Can age. 2028-2055+

Château Montrose

Château Montrose is one of the most iconic estates in the Saint-Estèphe appellation, on the left bank of Bordeaux. Classified as a Second Grand Cru Classé in 1855, it embodies the power, longevity and stylistic rigor characteristic of the great wines of northern Médoc. Located at the southern tip of Saint-Estèphe, directly bordering the Gironde estuary, the estate benefits from a terroir of rare homogeneity, often compared to that of the greatest classified growths neighboring Pauillac.

The Château Montrose vineyard extends over approximately 95 hectares in a single block, predominantly planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Merlot, Cabernet Franc and a touch of Petit Verdot. This configuration gives the wines a deep structure, marked aromatic intensity and remarkable aging potential. The Montrose style is distinguished by its balance between controlled power, freshness and tannic precision.

Among the most remarkable vintages are Château Montrose 1921, Château Montrose 1989, Château Montrose 1990, Château Montrose 1996, Château Montrose 2000, Château Montrose 2009, Château Montrose 2010, Château Montrose 2015, regularly acclaimed for their concentration and aging potential. The estate also produces a renowned second wine, La Dame de Montrose, crafted with the same quality standards and offering a more accessible expression of the terroir.
