Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
A totally compelling Climens and every bit as good as the 1988. It is probably the best Climens made since their spectacular 1971. Still light gold in color, it has an expansive bouquet of new oak, oranges, pineapples, and other tropical fruits. In the mouth, there is great richness that seems all the more impressive because of the wine's remarkable clarity and definition. There is as much botrytis in the 1986 as in the 1988. Despite the intensity and extract levels, this sweet wine comes across as crisp and relatively light. The 1986 is a stunning example of Climens at its very best.

Jeff Leve - The Wine Cellar Insider
Still going strong, the wine pops as soon as its poured, serving up its burnt caramel, candied orange peel, almond, butterscotch and honey-coated apricot with pineapple character. Fresh, bright, sweet and lifted, this is a beauty to drink today.

Medium-dark golden yellow in color. Full, forward & attractive nose of ripe fruit aromas of yellow peaches, apricots lemon rind & tropical notes of pineapple with overtones of floral notes of honeysuckle, honey, toffee, burnt caramel, baking spices, minerals & a slight hint of vanilla. Medium-full bodied with a very good concentration of well balanced & smooth textured, lush, ripe sweet fruit flavors of yellow peaches, dried apricots, pineapple & oranges with honey, spices, toffee, minerals & a slight hint of vanilla. Long lingering sweet finish. Drinks quite well at present & at 38 years of age, it should continue to develop slightly further with additional years although any significant further development is doubtful. Fill was in lower neck; cork was stained 1/4 up but intact.

Gorgeous, ripe, and rich, oozing with tropical, honey and mineral flavors that take off like a heat-seeking missile on the finish. Tempting now.

Light orange with a peachy nose. Relatively low acidity. Slightly soft but fun. Floral notes. Very slightly simple and with less concentration than the Yquem 1986 served blind alongside.

Château Climens
Château Climens is a 30-hectare wine estate located in Barsac, Gironde. In the Barsac AOC, it is classified as a Premier Grand Cru in the official 1855 Bordeaux classification. The 30-hectare continuous vineyard sits on red clay-sand soil over limestone. The grape variety is 100% Sémillon (one of the few single-variety vineyards in the region), with a density of 6,600 vines/ha and an average vine age of 35 years. Climens produces only sweet white wine. Climens' yields are particularly low, averaging 7 hl/ha, or even 4 hl/ha in difficult years, allowing for exceptional quality and concentration. The estate produces a second wine called Cyprès de Climens or Les Cyprès de Climens, in memory of a curious tradition: when boats paid their toll (right of passage) on the Ciron, they were given a blue cypress branch to prove payment. Outstanding vintages: 1971, 1983, 1986, 1988, 1989, 1990, 2001, 2005. Overall, the wines produced at Climens are consistently high-flying and of high quality. This is due to the high-quality production standards demanded by Bérénice Lurton and her team.
