Jeff Leve - The Wine Cellar Insider
This has clearly moved into its prime-time drinking window. Splash decanted, the wine shows off its nose of tobacco leaf, flowers, herbs, and a melange of red fruits with ease. Silky, rich, soft, and polished, the finish leaves you with touches of licorice, thyme, espresso, spice, mint, and sweet red pit fruits.

A beautiful Canon-la-Gaffeliere that is one of the best bottles I have tried. The wine is just starting to open up now offering delicious ripe plums, cedar and ripe blackberry fruit. Round, velvety red with a persistent finish.

Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
Performing as I expected, but still several years away from full maturity, this extraordinarily flamboyant, full-bodied, opulent, sexy St. Emilion stood out for its backward structure and youthful personality. A dark plum/garnet hue is followed by a superb bouquet of roasted coffee, kirsch, blackberries, licorice, herbs, and forest floor. Full-bodied, dense, rich, and pure, it is a total hedonistic as well as intellectual turn-on. Enjoy it over the next decade.

By far the best for its intense fruit nose and especially its supple, round but also elongated and fleshy palate. Beautiful flavorsome finish, fresher than the attack, that's the point of interest. Beautiful length where the ripe tannin appears very late. The finesse will come with the patina of time.

Some brightness in the ruby. Quite a youthful, 'pointed', sharp nose without much development yet. Rich and sweet and with more than a hint of dark chocolate, this leaps up and down for attention. The acid and tannin are still a little jagged, in modern idiom. Very savoury finish. Firm and still on the way up.

Wine Enthusiast January - 2003
Wine Enthusiast
This is the flagship wine from the mini-empire (now comprising five properties) that is controlled by Comte Stephan von Niepperg. He has made a modern, wood dominated wine, with rich, concentrated black fruits. It is powerful, perhaps too powerful, lacking a sense of the usual grace of this estate, although the ripeness of the wine does compensate.

Lovely ruby hue to this, with a juicy, dark, very polished, svelte fruit quality. Tight kirsch-like aromas, very pure and deep. More of that svelte, blue/black fruit character on the palate with lots of structure and power. This seems like a real baby, but with obvious potential. Very good indeed/excellent.

Magazine RVF A wine that shows rich and warm, with very smooth fruit and ripe tannins. Very open, in a seductive and opulent style.

Château Canon La Gaffelière
Château Canon La Gaffelière

German Stephan von Neipperg has spared no effort to restore the former glory of this highly reputed château in the years following World War II. Cultivation has become more rigorous, yields have been significantly reduced, and vinification has embraced modern methods, giving the wines remarkable concentration. The château also produces a very expensive and highly sought-after cuvée outside the appellation, called Mondotte.
