Expert's opinions
Deep plum colour, oyster shell salinity on the first nose, a classic signature of 2010 that is quickly followed up by bitter black chocolate and tight liquorice root. Great quality, just a stunning sleek damson and cassis-filled wine but these bristling tannins remain very much in control right now, and I suggest giving it a good few more years before the excellence is truly released. No question in my mind that it is going to storm into the top of St Julien when fully in its drinking window. 50% new oak, 44hl/h yield.

Strong ruby red, dark core; smoky nose, black tea, licorice, dark cherry fruit, plum, cassis; densely structured on the palate, lots of pressure, masses of polished tannins, excellent acidity, still wild and youthful, but with great tension and lots of finesse. 2028-2045

Tasted blind. First bottle oxidised. Second bottle: opaque core and bricky rim. Dark, smoky and oaky but deep in black fruit. Savoury, dense but with a stony elegance to the texture. Finesse here. Not trying to charm but dark-suited and refined. Long, too. I love its restraint and power.

The nose, with its espresso, smoke, blackberry, cedar and cigar box has a lot to offer. The palate, with more than ample blackberry, currant, cocoa and oak is round, plush, and fruity. This is a nice wine but it’s probably going to continue showing a touch of oak in its profile.

We like this wine for its perfect balance, its precise craftsmanship, the class of its tannins, the pure crystal-clear fruit expression. Needs to mature.

Deep dark ruby garnet, violet reflections, delicate lightening at the rim, smoky-spicy underlaid dark berry compote, ripe plums, a hint of raisins in the background. Juicy, cherry-like, freshly structured, well-integrated tannins, delicate nougat notes, also a fine dried fruit component in the finish, subtly vegetal in the finale, shows traces of a certain overripeness, perhaps harvested a touch too late.
